Areas The Casa dei Teatri Library
This library specialises in theatre, dance and performances, all live. Its heritage comprises books, magazines, videos and CDROM apart from documentary material of all the events that occur in the Casa dei Teatri.
Through an agreement drawn up in 2000, the Istituzione Biblioteche di Roma has been entrusted with the Giancarlo Sbragia Fund by the Regione Lazio for its preservation, use and enhancement. The Fund boasts a vast collection of books, periodicals, opera librettos, hall programmes, film scripts, posters and playbills – a historical heritage of great value for scholars and live theatre lovers. It comprises 12,000 posters and playbills which recall the activities of a large number of theatrical companies; 2,500 ranging from film scripts and hall programmes, specialised magazines and over 7,000 books some of which with autographs. The Fund was born from an idea of Amedeo Frati, an art director, who looked for, purchased and preserved theatre documents over the last fifty years.
The Cinema Umberto Barbaro Library
This library was born in Rome thanks to the commitment of many intellectuals, amongst which Alberto Abruzzese, Giovanni Angella, Mino Argentieri and Lino Miccichè, the property of the same Foundation, the Library after having been housed in the halls of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni until 2003, is one of the special collections of Villino Corsini dedicated to the cinema with a large number of books and magazines, scripts of films already carried out and themes and stage designs of films that have never been made, periodicals on the subject and a substantial photographic collection.
The Immemmoriale of Carmelo Bene Library and Study Centre
The project born from the collaboration between the Biblioteche di Roma, the Ente Teatrale Italiano and the Fondazione Immemoriale, has the goal of preserving, spreading and promoting written and sound documentation in Italy and the world of the work performed by Carmelo Bene, providing scholars and lovers of advanced theatrical language, created by artists, his collection of books, copy-books, autographs, stage photos, typed film scripts and hall programmes, as well s 700 audio recordings of his voice recitals.
Villino and Scuderie Corsini
The Villino is a charming seventeenth century building belonging to the Villa Corsini, purchased in 1856 by Prince Filippo Andrea V Doria Pamphilj and annexed from the large villa outside Porta S. Pancrazio. The building was restored by the architect Andrea Busiri Vinci from 1866 to 1869 to be used as a residence for the family’s eldest son. It was restored again in 1894, giving it an eclectic appearance with refined external finishings in Malta stone and red brick, doors and other internal decorations in precious materials; partially standing on antique structures.. The design of the project was defined by Prince Pamphilj as ‘the ultramontane style’, following the inspiration of the Anglo-Saxon or Central European world. The annexed Scuderie also form part of the first seventeenth century nucleus of Villa Corsini and were originally used by the nearby vineyard as a dining room. After having been purchased by the Pamphilj family, they were used as stables for servicing the nearby Villino.
Casa dei TeatriThe Casa dei Teatri, located in the historic Villino Corsini in Villa Pamphili, is the result of a project dedicated to live performances from a multidisciplinary view, combining study and training courses with those of "creating" and "seeing" performances. For this reason, collaboration between the Department of culture and the Biblioteche di Roma not only ensures a modern service for specialists as an excellent promotion of theatre culture for a larger public but a program open to research and reflection involving the scenic world.
The Casa dei Teatri offers a unique scenario in Rome because of its original special collections and areas for exhibitions, meetings and projections and the coming opening of the multipurpose hall in the previous stables. Activities take place agreed upon with the Municipio Roma XVI and with the contribution of an important body such as the Ente Teatrale Italiano. The magnificent seventeenth century architecture houses study areas communicating with each other, to be used for exhibitions, meetings based on subjects and consulting facilities related to research, specialised studies and cultural investigations.
The library of the Casa dei Teatri is highly specialised and houses the Giancarlo Sbragia fund which boasts a historical heritage of material for those who study live performances of great value. Carmelo Bene's Immemoriale is a centre whose goal is to preserve, spread and promote both written and sound documentation concerning the work that Carmelo Bene carried out.
The Cinema Umberto Barbaro Library offers a large number of books and magazines, film scripts and stage designs, journals on the subject and photographs. During the summer, the activities of the Casa develop into a real and proper summer season offering music, theatre and performances for children on a large open air stage set up in the area in front of the Villino Corsini.
