A.N.E.D.
A.N.E.D. Associazione Nazionale Ex Deportati Politici dei Campi Nazisti (An association for ex political prisoners in Nazi Concentration Camps) was created in the early postwar period by the ex prisoners of Milan, Turin, Rome and Udine intended to represent the individual and collective history and the rights of the survivors and the relatives of the fallen without distinction of creeds or political ideas. Created as a Non-profit Corporation by a decree dated the 5th of November 1968, ANED has the purpose of informing mainly young people about the history of the Nazi/Fascist deportation and the historical/political mechanisms that made it possible. It co-operates with local institutions (Municipality, Province and Region) organising trips for studying lagers in Poland and Germany, with guides for students, survivors of the genocide and historians. It represents survivors and relatives of the fallen in the claimant controversies towards Germany as well as matters regarding those sent to the concentration camps and to hard labour activities.
The Roman section, which will be housed in the Casa della Memoria e della Storia, has been working in this city for 50 years and provides schools and citizens with all its long experience in divulging material about Italian deportation and the historical period involved through the Library and Video Library "Giovanni Melodia" and "Fondo Marco Pavia", offering video interviews to survivors, autobiographical manuscripts and research.
The Fondazione Memoria della Deportazione (Deportation Remembrance Foundation), seated in Milan, has been active since 2003 where all documentation coming from the different territorial sections are sent for keeping and use for research at a national level.
ANED publishes the Triangolo Rosso, a publication of information, historical and cultural debates about deportation and the activities and research of the association in the territory.

A.N.E.I.
A.N.E.I. The Associazione Nazionale ex Internati (National Institution of ex.Prisoners) was created in 1946 among the survivors of the Concentration Camp in Nazi Germany. It was declared a Non-profit Corporation by Decree no. 403 dated the 12th of April 1948 and gathered together many lager survivors for the purpose of providing them with moral and material assistance. Over the years it delivered an organised work of research and collection of documents, contained in tens of volumes. According to the Articles of Association, the Head Office of the National Management is in Rome.
A.N.E.I. organises and participates in seminaries and meetings, intervenes in schools to describe the events of imprisonment, manages publications on imprisonment and deportation and informs its associates through a quarterly bulletin where research, studies, life and activities of the Association can be found. It is active in assisting survivors and their families, provides historical research and promotes its knowledge regarding the specific events described in its statute through evidence (diaries, essays, interviews) of those who were sent to the concentration camps and those activities having a patriotic or a moral meaning. It organises the National Archive of the Association with the prisoners cards with their particulars, the library, the newspaper library, the photo library and the video library. It furthers relations with the Ministero della Difesa to carry out institutional activities. It performs tasks regarding technical and judicial assistance to obtain compensation for concentration camp hard labour prisoners.
It operates all over Italy in hundreds of provincial and municipal seats with initiatives to keep alive the solidarity of the imprisonment years. Following the initiative of many Municipal Sections of the ANEI, numerous monuments, steles and plaques were erected to recall the large number of prisoners who died in the lagers.

A.N.P.I. the Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d'Italia (National Partisan Association of Italy) is mainly committed to representing fighters for freedom and for those values connected to Antifascism, the Resistance, the War of Liberation taken from the Constitution, the basic document of the state and programmatic for the progress of democracy, of which the Association is an active supporter. It manages the documentation of the participation of the Italian partisans in the War of Liberation in Yugoslavia, in the Balkans, in the French Maquis, with the partisans of the Soviet Union, the foreign ex prisoners who fought in the lines of the Italian partisans and the members of the Allied Missions in Rome and the territory. It is active in assisting survivors and families, does research and keeps both preparatory and educational documentation and keeps in touch with the central bodies of the Municipalities and districts especially on the occasion of celebrations and commemorations. It keeps up study and research relations with the State Archives with deposits and private funds and in collaboration with the Foundation and Cultural Associations operating in study and historical investigation in the Twentieth Century. ANPI who manages the co-ordination of the Associazioni Resistenziali (Resistance Associations), also manages the Centro Telematico di Storia Contemporanea (Telecommunications Centre for Contemporary History).
It was created on the 28th of July with an agreement protocol between ANPI of Rome, the Comune di Roma, the Provincia di Roma and the Regione di Lazio, the Centre performs the following functions:
- It offers access to the archives of the Association and to their documents in special locations equipped with informatics/telecommunication tools, via a centralised informatics catalogue, processed by the Sistema Bibliotecario del Comune di Roma;
- It is consistent with institutional objectives, organises and manages (or manages together) conferences, seminaries, film projections, preparatory and educational courses, in the Casa della Memoria e della Storia;
- It does and promotes research in the national field and abroad;
- It provides cultural and organisational assistance to the institutions (Municipality, Province and Region) on the occasion of commemorations, ceremonies and the like as well as guided visits to historical locations related to the Resistance and Deportation in Italy, Poland and Germany.
The Centre (www.storiaxxxisecolo.it) avails itself of the voluntary, free collaboration of professional journalists, historians and archivists. It has correspondents in Moscow, Berlin, Paris and Lubiana. Like the knots of a network, its system acts on Internet, the Civil Network, the Roman Province network and the regional Laziomatica network, interfacing the portal International Veterans Club (Moscow) portal. It does research in Italy and abroad, manages the records containing about a thousand cards of its members (giving the reasons why they were recognised as fighting partisans or patriots) documents of the period, the library, the video library (for the Roman Province as well); creates audiovisual media, books and the periodical Persona e Società.
It has agreements with two local television broadcasting stations (Roma Uno, Teleambiente) and a satellite Tv (Nessuno) and collaborates with the Rai Tg (a feature figuring historical events), via the Mandragola newspaper co-operative collaborates with the RAI Teletext, with forty radio stations in network; the monthly publication ZAI-NET, accessible to 300 scholastic bodies with 250 thousand copies printed, has relations sanctioned by protocol with a large number of cultural and associations and social clubs.

A.N.P.P.I.A. The Associazione Nazionale Perseguitati Politici Italiani Antifascisti (The National Italian Antifascist Politically Persecuted People's Association) was created in 1953 on an initiative by the Senator Umberto Terracini, condemned to 22 years of imprisonment (of which he served 11 years) in 1926 by the Tribunale Speciale Fascista (Fascist Special Court) because of his opposition to the Fascist Dictatorship. After being released, he was banished under police observation where he remained until 1943. He participated in the War of Liberation, was President of the Constituent Assembly and signatory of the Republican Constitutional Chart, founded on the ideals and principles that inspired the protagonists of the Resistance to Fascism and the War of Liberation. ANPPIA combined in a sole association all those condemned to prison because of antifascism, those banished under police observation following decisions taken by special Prefectorial Commissions, those who were exiled, those who were persecuted and discriminated against or on probation.
The monthly journal L'Anfascista was created in 1944, "The voice - as Terraccini wrote - of those who had been alive and active in Italy during the dictatorship who can now, in a democratic Republic, consider the present situation with the valuable experience of those who had to pay the price of the hardest sacrifices".
The ANPPIA acquired its legal status in 1975 by DPR (Decree of the President of the Republic.)
The Association, organised in Federations at a provincial and regional level, has been continuously active since it was created to keep the darkest period of our recent national history alive. The founders are no longer alive but the importance of the association is such that all those citizens having the same ideas are able to belong because of a modification in its status.

The APC, Associazione Partigiani Cristiani (Christian Partisan Association), was founded in 1947 on a proposal by Enrico Mattei to safeguard the identity of the Christian Resistance from a historical and ideal point of view. The members of the APC are those who fought for freedom and in particular for the Resistance in the role of partisans, patriots and deserving citizens: the members of the National Liberation Commission, the soldiers who fought along with the Allied Forces, the survivors from concentration camps, deportation and imprisonment, politically persecuted people. The Association is open to all those who accept and share their scopes, being: enhancing the moral and patriotic heritage of the Resistance, recalling the fallen and their sacrifices, promoting cultural activities such as collecting documentation on facts and events they have experienced or witnessed directly or indirectly. Commitment is also directed towards schools to promote the interest of young people and to become aware of the history of the birth of the republic through the fight for freedom, especially from the voice of the protagonists.
In 1948, the APC and a further 22 Partisan Associations founded the Federazione Italiana Volontari della Libertà (the Italian Federation of Volunteers for Freedem), founded as a Non-profit Corporaton on the 15th of April 1048, presided over by Enrico Mattei and later by Paolo Emilio Taviani.
The President of the APC then became Mario Ferrari-Aggradi.
The Provincial Secretary of Rome organised the XVth National Congress of the Christian Partisan Association which was held in Rome from the 17th to the 18th of November 2005. The new President of the National APC was elected, Senator Gerardo Agostini and the National Secretary Bruno Olini who acted as the Provincial Secretary as well, was confirmed.
The APC also collaborates with the Coordinamento delle Associazioni dell'Antifascismo, Resistenza e Guerra di Liberazione (Coordination of the Associations for Antifascism, Resistance and the War of Liberation) - Comitati Provinciali e Regionali di Roma e Lazio (Rome and Lazio Provincial and Regional Committees).
CIRCOLO "GIANNI BOSIO"
The Circolo Gianni Bosio founded in 1969 to promote critical knowledge and alternatives to culture, memory and oral and musical expressivity of the popular classes. There are members in the Association who participate actively in the activities of the group. The current president is Prof. Alessandro Portelli who has the task of co-ordinating the work of the Committees who have been created to follow the Circle's projects. The Association offers the following sections: the educational section that organises seminaries, public meetings, training periods on subjects for training such as popular culture and historical rememberance; the Music Schools - managed by Silvye Genovese - offering popular music courses at various levels and the "Franco Coggiola" Sound Media where over 5,000 recorded hours are kept and where they may be modified, the result of research the Circle has made from 1967 to the present day. The Circolo Gianni Bosio, connected to the Istituto Ernesto de Martino, has the largest collection of sound material, both musical and historical, of Rome and Lazio, a resource of rememberances and visions, a matrix of performances, concerts, seminaries, discs and books. It has a library, a documentation centre, a collection of discs, CD's and videos. The Circle researches audio and audio/video recordings to enhance the archives of 'oral recollections'. These do not only comprise evidence of events but capture data on how recalling the same may be transmitted again to new generations who will in this way live them again. Investigations on the events connected to Fascism, Antifascism, the Resistance, particularly in Rome and Lazio, are extended to environmental and social cultural conditions involving very different forms of communication, even musical and literary, that corroborate and reveal the historical period, thus facilitating its present comprehension. F.I.A.P.
The F.I.A.P., Federazione Italiana delle Associazioni Partigiani (The Italian Federation of Partisan Associations) was founded by Ferruccio Parri, Prime Minister of the first government after the Liberation and because of his activities received recognition as a Non-profit Corporation by DPR (Decree of the President of the Republic) on the 20th of November 1963.
It was presided by On. Aldo Animasi, former Mayor of Milan, Minister of the Republic and Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies for couple of decades.
The Roman and Lazio Provincial and Regional committee is currently presided over by Vittorio Cimmiotta.
The FIAP combines all the partisan associations, particularly those of Giustiza
e Libertà who refer to the values of reformism, democracy and liberalism and was born against those who at the time sustained the politics of the then Soviet Union.
Among the figures of great importance of the Body, the following are recalled: Antonio Greppi, Mayor of Milan, On. Ezio Vigorelli, Minister of Labour, Prof. Norberto Bobbio; On. Prof Pietro Calamandrei; Prof. Leo Valiani; Prof. Alessandro Galante Garrone; Prof. Nuto Revelli; prof. Giuliano Vassalli; Prof. Giorgio Spini; Prof. Gaetano Arfè.
FIAP has published and is still publishing a large number of historical and cultural publications as well as a two-monthly periodical.
Apart from delivery to its members, these publications are also distributed to Cultural Centres, Public Institutions, Universities and Libraries.

I.R.S.I.F.A.R.
The I.R.S.I.F.A.R. Istituto Romano per la Storia d'Italia dal Fascismo alla Resistenza (The Roman Institute for the History of Italy from Fascism to the Resistance) was founded in Rome in 1964 by Ferruccio Parri and is part of the network of the Istituti Storici della Resistenza associated to the Istituto Nazionale per la Storia del Movimento di Liberazione in Italia. It is active in the fields of study, research and education in the field of contemporary history, promotes cultural and publishing initiatives. The main subjects describing the scientific aspect of the Institute are the history of the Resistance, the social and political history of Rome and Lazio, the relation between history and remembrance, the public use of history and the history of Republican Italy. The commitment of teaching contemporary history is however important and has been the focal point for activities in educating teachers and students.
The Institute possesses a specialised library with a computerized catalogue; the archive - considered as of "great historical interest" - is governed by the Soprintendenza Archivistica for Lazio - comprises three sections: the first has funds and researches the Resistance in Rome and Lazio; the second is an extensive documentation on young political movements from the sixties to the nineties of last century, the third contains the private archive of the historian Nicola Gallerano. All these records may be consulted on the network (www.archividelnovecento.it) . The library and the archive represent a major heritage for historical research and distribution, a heritage that the IRSIFAR preserves and enhances so that it becomes more and more available to the public and meets the various requirements for study and in-depth investigation. IRSIFAR regularly publishes L'Annale Irsifar and since 1998, has awarded an annual prize for a University thesis in Contemporary History, in memory of Nicola Gallerano.

Casa della Memoria e della StoriaTo relate, know and share the remembrance and the history of the twentieth century and of Rome.
The Casa della Memoria e della Storia is an institution of the Comune di Roma. Associations representing the historical remembrance of antifascism, the Resistance, the War of Liberation, the remembrances of the Twentieth Century and the cultural bodies for the reconstruction, preservation and promotion of these remembrances, participate in its activities and management.
Remembrances and history are the issues of our present, because our origins and the values of our democracy are rooted there and because recalling not only the past but the present as well, is essential for an alert, participating citizenship. A major role has been played by certain associations in cultivating the remembrances of the citizens in our city. This because they have worked on remembrance and historical research as a real and proper public service made to the institutions and citizens and ultimately to the whole Country. This is the reason why the Comune di Rome has promoted the Casa della Memoria e della Storia where Associations, whose direct participation in antifascist and Roman democratic events, get together to continue their work of research, documentation, instruction and historical diffusion. Some of these institutions have donated their valuable records together with the following Cultural Bodies and Associations: Associazione Nazionale ex Internati (ANEI) Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d'Italia (ANPI), Associazione Nazionale Perseguitati Polictici Antifascisti (ANPPIA), Federazione Italiana Associazioni Partigiani (FIAP) ), Federazione Nazionale Volontari della Libertà/Associazione Partigiani Cristiani (FIVL/APC), Associazione Nazionale ex Deportati nei Campi Nazisti (ANED), Istituto Romana per la Storia d'Italia dal Fascismo alla Resistenza (IRSIFAR), the educational section and some sound and audio visual media of the Circolo Gianni Bosio as well as the coordination of the Società Italiana di Storia Orale.
The Casa della Memoria e della Storia looks mainly ahead to the new generations, through an on-going collaboration with schools by initiatives and proposals to create an interest in young people in their cultural heritage and the activities of the Casa.
The Casa della Memoria e della Storia collects, preserves and enhances the heritage of books, records, sound and audio visual media of all its members ensuring access and usability for the public, scholars and schools.
The creation of the Casa della Memoria e della Storia has given the city of Rome a unique institution of its kind: a pole of multidisciplinary high level attraction, rich in the history of various generations, able to coordinate and demonstrate the work of remembrance and history that can be seen today in Rome.
The Casa della Memoria e della Storia is a centre of documentation and research, to ensure the preservation and custody of major cultural records, such as libraries, sound and visual media, a centre to promote initiatives, projects, publications and demonstrations to study the meaning of important periods of our history, a qualified place for debates, round tables, scientific conventions and activities. The Casa will be the seat for the Mayor's Memory Delegate.
The Casa della Memoria e della Storia will also be the seat for the Telematic Center of Contemporary History (Centro Telematico di Storia Contemporanea), founded on the 28th of July, 1999 by an agreement between the ANPI of Rome and the Comune di Roma, the Provincia di Roma and the Regione Lazio. This is the organ servicing the Casa della Memoria e della Storia. Associations and institutions collaborate with the Casa della Memoria e della Storia which although they maintain their external seats, partecipate in activities and initiatives, these are Associazione Nazionale delle Forze Armate Regolari della Guerra di Liberazione; Museo della Liberazione; Associazione Nazionale dei Familiari Italiani Martiri. The building of the Casa della Memoria e della Storia was exchanged with the Hebrew Community of Rome to the Comune di Roma according to a protocol agreed upon when the Hebrew School moved away from Via San Francesco di Sales, 5 to another site.
The building was reconstructed by the Assessorato alle Politiche del Patrimonio e della Promozione dei Progetti Speciali. These works followed the project of Architect Renato Guidi together with Engineer Lorenzo Mariotti of the Studio Guidi e Santori and were carried out by the Pulcini Group.
The following bodies collaborated with the project of the Casa della Memoria e della Storia:
- The Culture Department of the Comune di Roma for coordinating programs and management
- The Rome Library Institute who supplied the bibliography for enhancing and enabling the use of the collections kept at the Casa della Memoria e della Storia
- Archivio Capitolino who collaborated in the assessment of the documents and the collections
- Zètema Progetto Cultura for the facilities for reception and management purposes of the common spaces
