Culture Department - Office for Performance and Events
The Office for Performance and Events is in charge of organising theatre, music, dance and cinema activities and co-ordinates their programmes. A great number of events occur throughout the year of great international importance. We recall the European Music Festival, Summer in Rome, the White Night, the New Year's Eve Concert and the events organised on the occasion of Christmas, Carnival and Easter.
Summer in Rome (Estate Romana) is particularly unique in the world owing to the high level and variety of its performances, as well as the charm and enchantment of the places where a large number of these events took place, hence making it a national and international happening. Summer in Rome is directed towards an ever changing public ranging from a popular to a demanding, refined public.
The choice is indeed vast ranging from reviews of international fame offering popular, traditional and experimental festivals in archaeological Rome as well as in suburban areas, in villas and modern amphitheatres along the path of an incredible metropolitan Grand Tour, promising surprises and emotions. Programmes comprise all types of performances proposing great rock events together with high level symphonic concerts, ethnic music, literature meetings and projections of films in those places where they were filmed, contemporary theatre with great soloists, popular cabaret, international dancing and many others.
In 2005, thousands of Italian and foreign artists participated in 153 events in the program, proposing stimulating contaminations as well and intersections between the different languages. Performances were given in all the 19 Roman districts totalling 2,646 appointments between the suburbs and the rest of the city.
In the theatrical field, the Office for Organization of Performance Events promotes the activities of the artists and the city's theatres, the optimization of the relations between theatres and the city, defining those spaces that are 'not traditional' for events.
In the music field as well, a large number of events are offered ranging from classical music to experimental music and major rock concerts. There will be two appointments among others of great cultural value: Jazz in Summer, at Villa Celimontana and in the Parco della Musica in autumn and the locations in Rome and the Music Project, the richest and best organised event of contemporary Italian music.
In the cinema field, apart from a profitable relationship with the bodies who produce and programme quality films and promote all purpose moving pictures there will be a large selection of films coming from Cannes, Venice, Locarno and Taormina, almost all at the same time as the Festival.
In the dance field, there are also presentations and festivals of an international character for some time. These highlight the difference between artists of different origins, implemented in collaboration with the embassies of foreign culture bodies. Lastly, particular attention has been paid to programming in the suburban areas.
