Museo Civico di Zoologia
Museo Civico di Zoologia

The Museo Civico di Zoologia goes back to the end of the seventeenth century. It was transferred to the Villa Borghese park only in 1932 where it was housed in the same building as the ex Zoological Garden of Rome until 1998 but now stands alone.

The Museo Civico di Zoologia is an institution focusing on research and education that contributes to the knowledge and preservation of animal biodiversity, the creation of scientific culture and the dissemination of knowledge regarding nature.

The Museum houses a large number of collections comprising examples of animals. Millions of these, coming from private or public collections or directly on site, have been prepared for preservation, safeguarded in hundreds of showcases, drawers, cupboards and special containers to be shown to the public, on the basis of scientific knowledge and modern display methods.

Preservation, growth, study and cultural enhancement of the collections - these are the fundamental aims of the Museum! These examples bear witness to the past and present animal life of our Earth.

The Museum is an extensive workshop where, thanks to studies performed on preserved examples it is possible to reconstruct the biological characteristics of the animal species, where they lived and evolved throughout the environments of our planet.

The Museum offers children and adults a great deal of cultural activities and educational experiences, such as guided tours, on the spot knowledge gained from Museum findings, didactic workshops, films, conferences, exhibitions, artistic events and even outings for boys and girls, school camps as well as family meetings following scientific programs.

These displays, didactic projects and other cultural events offered by the Museum makes it possible to share knowledge and ideas with the public on the world of nature.
